The compression cushion, slightly V-shaped, helps open the birth canal, while the center ball keeps the instrument from slipping sideways. The ratchet mechanism allows for both pull and instant release, to aid the straining animal. Two soft nylon cords are looped around the calf's pasterns and hooked onto the ratchet. Unit assembles and disassembles easily and quickly.
